Choy Lee Fut (蔡李佛), Tsai Lee Fo, or Cai Li Fu is a style of Southern Chinese Kung Fu developed by master Chan Heung (陳享, 1805-1875). Choy Li Fut was named by master Chan to honor the Southern Shaolin monk Choy Fook (蔡褔) who taught him Choy Gar(蔡家拳), Li Yau San (李友山) who taught him Li Gar (李家功夫), his uncle Chan Yuen Wu (陳遠護), who taught him Hung Gar (洪家), and developed to honor the Buddha and the Shaolin roots of the style....
In the book "Tsai Lee Fo: The Golden Leopard Level Fist" the author explains one of the classic form of this style. This is a middle level form of the Tsai Lee Fo system. The book is well photographed with English and Chinese explanations on each page. This form characterised by Long Arm movements of this famous Southern Shaolin style. Choy Lee Fut (蔡李佛, Tsai Lee Fo) is characterized by the sweep and amplitude of powerful punches and forearms (influence of Southern Shaolin school). Kicks are also widely used. Kick techniques are sophisticated and varied. Along with low kicks, kicks to the head and body are often used.
The system combines the techniques from various Northern and Southern Chinese Kung Fu styles. The powerful forearm and hand techniques from the Southern Shaolin animal forms, combined with the extended, circular movements, twisting body, and agile footwork that characterizes Northern Chinese Martial Arts. It is considered an external style, combining soft and hard techniques, as well as incorporating a wide range of weapons as part of its curriculum. Choy Lee Fut contains a wide variety of techniques, including long and short range punches, kicks, sweeps and take downs, pressure point attacks, joint locks, and grappling.
